I often find that just going for a hike with my camera (backpack) is the best way to do the necessary reconnaissance (scouting and exploration) especially in a new of unfamiliar area but leaves you ready to take that shot if the conditions and opportunity present itself.

Each and every part of a woodland will have its own unique qualities. There is such diversity and range shapes and patterns, colours, textures, trees (don’t forget the fallen trees), shrubs, rocks and boulders, water features, trails and well worn paths.

The most interesting light for woodland photography comes in the early mornings. When the light is strong and bursting through the woodland canopy, morning fog or haze will add an enchanting atmosphere and a hint of mysteriousness to the landscape as will the wet foliage after  rain.
