The title “Boats-Etcetera” means “boats” obviously, but also all of the other boat related subject matter: harbours, docks, launches, ropes, anchors, wrecks, the mast and rigging, knots, wheel house, fishing nets and traps to mention a few.

Photographing “boats-etcetera” is much like making any other photos, with regard to the factors we need to consider: subject matter, story telling and the all important composition. Always take time to determine (1) the subject of my photograph; (2) how can I emphasize that subject? (3) What can/must I do to simplify the picture by eliminating any elements that distract from the subject?

Water, water, water, everywhere!! Water provides both (1) challenges: and by that I mean, water itself, water spray, salt water and it’s spray, rain, foam, waves and so on. Cameras don't take kindly to water, so the main thing to remember when doing photography in the vicinity of water (in all its forms) is to always protect as much of your gear (and yourself) as possible. And (2) enchanting reflections in water, it’s shimmer, it’s rhythmic distortion of a subject, it’s motion and unpredictability can all add atmosphere to a great photograph.
